Vera Tan Hoveling
I am a visual artist, working with new media and technology. My artistic practice involves computer simulation, video games, animation and video installations. My work explores the appliances and impact that rapid evolving technology brings to our life and consciousness.
In 2014 I have earned my bachelor of fine arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam where I’ve studied at the department of the moving image, while also teaching myself how to write computer code. Currently I reside around Amsterdam and work in my studio in Ruigoord; acquiring more skills, collaborating, finding new applications for visual installations and performances that are displayed to a broad audience at festivals and exhibitions.
My work is an exploration of the computer generated or simulated world, it’s definitions and collision with ‘the real’. By interacting with the virtual world you become increasingly involved in the logic and decision-making structures of the virtual, engaging you in an experience where you are part of the whole.
The more complex the virtual, the more it appears alive. Because the more complexity is involved, the more it will appear to the nature of nature; dealing with innumerable amount of variables. Not only do these simulations appear alive to us, they are perceived as alive. If the level of immersion is overwhelming enough, virtual reality becomes reality.
