Johannes Holt Iversen & Neo-CoBrA Welcomes You!

During the post-war years 1948 to 1951 a group of like-minded abstract artists throughout Europe founded what was known to be the CoBrA movement. The painters were among other Asger Jorn, Karel Appel and Christian Dotremont. Though this is more than 60 years ago, what the artists did throughout Europe, has made a deep mark on our understanding of European abstract expressionism.

"Hungry Students" - Johannes Holt Iversen

However the art movement slowly came to an end in 1951 and the artists worked continuously from themselves, though their approach and work has been very significant for our cultural understanding of one Europe as it is today. Now 60 years after, Europe is in a completely different situation. Heavy lifting according to economic struggle as well as a bad approach on cheap labour that is flourishing throughout the entire continent.

“It has made us necessary to take the CoBrA approach up and revitalize it, the naivisitc use of primary colors and the idiom within its structure is still very contemporary. Even more important now than ever before since the European crisis’ are worse than it has ever been since the post-war.” – Johannes Holt Iversen, 2014

"Chemical Waste" - Johannes Holt Iversen

That is why abstract painter Johannes Holt Iversen (Copenhagen) has asked likeminded artists such as Menno Baars (Amsterdam), Ben Haveman (Amsterdam), Peter Hermans (Brussels) and others throughout Europe to revitalize the CoBrA statement and its manifest: Engaging the viewer with its free form, an expression of unity and peace, free understanding of color and a freedom of expression.

“Neo-CoBrA just happened I wasn’t even planning my way of expression, within EU there were just so much that needed to be expressed in a more light and free way than other contemporary art styles has been able to express it I guess.” – Johannes Holt Iversen, 2014

Neo-CoBrA are using the internet to share knowledge, experiences as well as their individual and collaborative artworks on social media.
